Wilhelm Gutwillinger se narodil 30. dubna 1910 v Moravské Třebové v domě na nádraží. Oba jeho rodiče byli původem ze Znojma, otec pracoval u železnic jako úředník. Od roku 1925 Wilhelm docházel do firmy Franz Bibus, kde se učil na ocelorytce. Po vyučení navštěvoval státní odbornou školu v Jablonci nad Nisou a tam také odmaturoval. Následně úspěšně vystudoval Akademii výtvarných umění v Praze, diplomovou práci vypracovával u profesora Otakara Španiela. Gutwillinger byl především medailér, v několika muzeích jsou však uchovávány také jeho bronzové busty.

Will Gutwillinger vytvořil v roce 1938 sochařský portrét obnovitele olympijských her Pierra de Coubertina (1863–1937) pro jeho pomník v Baden-Badenu. Existuje několik málo kopií této busty. Například jedna z nich je umístěna ve vestibulu gymnázia Pierra de Coubertina v Piěšťanech, další oficiální replika se nachází v Montevideu v Uruguayi a jedna je deponována v Městském muzeu Moravská Třebová.

Wilhelm Gutwillinger was born on April 30, 1910, in the railway station building in Moravská Třebová. Both of his parents were originally from Znojmo; his father served as an official for the railways. In 1925, Wilhelm began an apprenticeship as a steel engraver at the Franz Bibus company. Following his training, he attended the State Vocational School in Jablonec nad Nisou, where he completed his secondary education. He then went on to successfully graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he completed his diploma thesis under the renowned Professor Otakar Španiel. Although Gutwillinger was primarily a medalist, several museums also preserve his bronze busts.

In 1938, Wilhelm Gutwillinger created a sculptural portrait of the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin (1863–1937), for his monument in Baden-Baden. Only a few copies of this bust exist today. One is located in the entrance hall of the Pierre de Coubertin Grammar School in Piešťany, another official replica can be found in Montevideo, Uruguay, and one is held in the collection of the Moravská Třebová Municipal Museum.
